Demolition and ground works continued through May, culminating in the foundations being laid on 13th May.
The remainder of the garage walls were demolished, broken up and fed to the stone crusher. The garage's concrete floor and other areas of concrete base followed quickly, feeding the crusher's voracious appetite for most of a full day. A very large pile of hardcore ensued...
...far more than we will ever need for the job, so we were happy when a local farmer pal came along asking if he could take some of it. Good result all round!
By 10th May we had finally cleared all the old concrete, together with all manner of buried rubbish that has obviously accumulated in the 100-odd years since Pennine View was built. The foundations were dug and the local council building control inspector came along to check that all was in order.
At 07:30 on the 13th an enormous concrete pump arrived and a few minutes later the ready mix concrete truck was on site and being hooked up. Before long the foundations were being laid.
That took under an hour to complete! Finally the preparatory groundworks were completed and we could start the actual building work.
